As a side note, all the problems -including some performance issues- I had with Vista so far are because of drivers and applications themselves. Certainly, there is a MS guru that can address this in a more direct manner than the useless posts I have seen so far?. You can check what drivers (My addition to Murphy's Law). Anyway, I hope you get it installed. Perhaps you could bring it to a local tech with experience setting up computers for/with Vista?

I follow your arguments, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that is was strictly a method of control. (Why do atheists seem to always label every system .... I installed this update on 64 bit Vista But so far, both this fix and WGA have been totally hassle-free, on all my Vista machines (64 bit and 32 bit; desktop and laptop).

There are a lot of rough edges in Vista; and I do not think that any of the patches released so far have really improved it that much. I like a lot of what Vista has to offer; however Microsofts claim to not wait for SP1 for deployment is pure crap. I would never get any sleep if this was allowed for my user base.
